Hollyoaks star Jennifer Metcalfe has revealed why she may never get married.
Since joining the soap in 2006, Mercedes McQueen (played by Metcalfe) has had more than her fair share of dramatic romances in the village. But unlike her character, Metcalfe is taking a different approach to love.
Discussing her new relationship – which she wants to keep out of the spotlight – the actor shared that she and her partner are enjoying their time together. “It’s good, it’s great, he makes me really happy,” she told the Mirror.
“When you’re younger, in your twenties, you’re looking for a unicorn of a man and going, ‘Nah, that one’s not for me!’ Now I feel more at peace with where my life is at and it’s nice to share that with somebody.”
Though her iconic character has had seven weddings during her time on the soap, Metcalfe has no current plans to walk down the aisle in real life.
Lime Pictures“It’s not something I’ve ever seen on my path,” she said. “I’ve always wanted a child, and I have my little boy Daye, but I’ve never seen marriage in my plan.”
However, the star does have some thoughts on her nuptial outfit if she ever decides to tie the knot. She explained that she wants a more unique look than her on-screen wedding costumes.
“I’ve never dreamt of a big white wedding dress. I’ve had seven on Hollyoaks and if I ever did get married I’d wear black or gold or something completely different!” she said.
Metcalfe will soon be appearing as high-maintenance step-mum Candy in the new BBC comedy drama Just Act Normal. The show will explores what it means to be a Black working class teen in the UK today.
Describing her new character as “colder than Mercedes”, Metcalfe explained: “The siblings in it are going through massive difficulties and Candy just makes things worse. She likes the idea of having their dad to herself and doesn’t want to share him with his children. They irritate her. It’s a hostile relationship.”
