Beloved Neighbours actress Annie Jones has shared heartbreaking personal news this week, leaving fans stunned and emotional.
In an exclusive interview, the star — who has portrayed Jane Harris for decades — revealed that she is grieving the recent passing of a distant relative who played a pivotal role in her childhood.
“It may sound surprising to some,” Annie began, holding back tears. “But this woman… she wasn’t just a cousin or an aunt — she was like a second mother to me.”
Annie explained that during a difficult period in her early life, this relative — whom she referred to only as “Aunt L” — took her in and cared for her like her own child.
“When I was very young, my parents were struggling, and Aunt L stepped in without hesitation. She gave me stability, warmth, and the most unconditional love I’ve ever known. I still remember the bedtime stories, the cups of cocoa, the hugs when I felt scared. I owe so much of who I am to her.”
The loss, Annie said, came suddenly and unexpectedly.
“We hadn’t seen each other in a while, but we stayed in touch with letters and phone calls. Her passing caught me completely off guard. I’ve been crying every day since I found out.”
Despite the pain, Annie returned to the Neighbours set shortly after, saying that work offered her a form of escape — but also stirred up strong emotions.
“Every scene I do now feels tinged with grief. There are moments when I have to step away and just breathe. But the team has been incredibly supportive.”
Fans and castmates have poured out messages of sympathy, with many praising Annie for opening up about such a personal loss. Co-star Alan Fletcher (Dr. Karl Kennedy) wrote on social media:

For Annie, the grief remains raw — but she finds comfort in keeping her relative’s memory alive.
“I’ve planted lavender in my garden just for her. It was her favourite. And every time I smell it, I feel like she’s still with me.”
